The schooner Bowdoin was
designed by William H. Hand and built in 1921 by Hodgdon Brothers shipyard in
East Boothbay, Maine. She is the only American schooner built for Arctic exploration and
has made 29 trips above the Arctic Circle.
Three since she was acquired by the Maine Maritime
Academy. Students in small vessel
operations are fortunate to sail on the schooner Bowdoin.
She is heavy and carries less sail for her displacement
than most schooners because, in addition to Arctic ice hazards, the Arctic is known for having either no wind or too much
wind. During WW2 the Bowdoin was one
of the few sail powered vessels in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Her
assignment was to patrol off Greenland. The ship was declared the official sailing vessel
of the state of Maine in 1986. In
1989 Bowdoin was designated a national historic
Landmark.

Artist Statement
My painting technique incorporates
“old skool” mechanical and civil drafting techniques including ruling pens,
Leroy, inking the drawing and then completing it using watercolors, acrylics
and gouache. Originals
and prints of my watercolors are now part of private collections throughout the United States, and foreign
countries.
