Note from seller ...

**  Bill Peet is an absolute superb illustrator! For 30 years I used his picture storybooks in my classrooms to read aloud and delight young children ... AND to highlight his drawings technique and use of colour. Children's artwork really flourished under this teaching. Bill Peet's use of MULTIPLE colours in say: grass, or the sky is just mind-blowing and eye-opening for kids. (my opinion as a 30 year primary teacher!) and the bonus was his books also usually had a conservation message or life skills for us to discuss.

In original illustrated boards HARDcover binding, in publisher's delightfully  'like-illustrated' pictorial dustcover(not clipped!).

SYNOPSIS

A proud but decrepit lion learns a lesson about friendship from the vultures he despises. "A sketch of a scraggly maned decrepit old lion was also left on the wall for years before I found a story for him and named him 'Eli'."

"Once upon a time there was a lion named Eli who lived in the faraway land of Kumbumbazango. He was a decrepit old cat with a scruffy mop of a mane, and most of the thunder had gone out of his roar. Now, after many long years as a proud king of beasts, the old lion had finally become as meek as a mouse."

About the Author

Bill Peet was the author of 34 books published by Houghton Mifflin. One of these, BILL PEET: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, was named a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book. All of Bill Peet's books published by Houghton Mifflin Company, including his first book for children published in 1959, HUBERT'S HAIR-RAISING ADVENTURE, remain actively in print today.

In both his career as an author and illustrator of children's books and in his work as sketch artist and continuity illustrator at Walt Disney, Bill Peet created a menagerie of memorable characters. As he himself noted, "I write about animals because I love to draw them. Most of my animal characters have human personalities, and some are much like the people I know."

At Walt Disney, where Bill Peet worked for 27 years, he was a key participant in the production of classic films such as Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and 101 Dalmatians for which he was not only an artist, but the screenwriter as well.

Bill Peet's signature style enabled him to create fast-paced stories of fantastical adventure delivered with warmth and laugh-out-loud hilarity. His unfailing humor did not, however, prevent him from addressing such poignant issues as kindness toward others and respect for the environment. Through the exploits of his characters, Peet offered his audience a chance to see themselves and their world through new eyes.

"At some point," Bill Peet once said, "it occurred to me that drawing was something I couldn't possibly give up, and somehow it must be turned into a profession." He went on to not only fulfill his dream but to introduce generations of young readers to his delightful vision of humor, friendship and compassion.

Very,  very entertaining  read!

Reviews

I LOVE Bill Peet's books….  Bill Peet is a wonderful author and illustrator. His stories and illustrations are HILARIOUS.

The easy to follow, relatable plots with nice, neat endings are perfect for the younger set. And they all have a message that parents can discuss with their kids.

Eli is a sweet (but always funny) story about an unorthodox way of making and being a friend.

I had a copy of Cyrus when I was a kid and loved it. Wish I'd known there were more.

I LOVE the narrative   Bill Peet books have been entertaining us, our children, and our grandchildren for years! I love the narrative, whether it's rhyming or not. The illustrations are excellent and the stories are addicting! Love them!

A famed Disney Animator's great books....    I discovered Bill Peet's books when my children were little. Their teacher introduced them to the kids, along side his autobiography. I had no idea he was one of the main animators for Walt Disney, drawing all my favorite characters from Sword in the Stone, Cinderella, Peter Pan, etc. His own books such as Eli have the same loving illustrations and great story lines. Love them all.

What a wonderful book for children. ....A great tale about unlikely friends and wrong first impressions. Bill Peet is a genius!

If you like Bill Peet, also check out The Caboose Who Got Loose and the Gnats of Notty Pine, our other family favorites.

For a couple of reasons I LOVE this book ...... I am thrilled with this book! We bought it just because my son's name is Eli - but I have become a big fan of Bill Peet too! Terrific author/illustrator.

MAGNIFICENT!!  ...... This is the same classic story that you might have read yourself as a kid. Although not an original print, it is nice to be able to buy these books for the next generation to enjoy.

Bill Peet books are classics. Today's parents likely grew up reading him  ....  As a child I had a heavy diet of wonderful, beautifully illustrated Bill Peet stories - which is why we come back to them again for OUR children.

THIS book is OUTSTANDING …..  Eli is a fine book for teaching to look for value even in others who are not in your circles. The physical quality of the book was tops as well.

WONDERFUL story - especially since his daddy is from Africa...... Bought this for my baby when I was pregnant with him because I was naming him... Eli. Great story. Especially since his daddy is from Africa.

A GREAT story ....  I read this story years ago to my son and now giving to other children. Carries an important message about looking out for one another.

Marvellous Reading!

DELIGHTFUL  DRAWINGS  THROUGHOUT
