Early 20th century handwoven, hand dyed mud cloth textile from the Bogolan region of Mali, West Africa. The design is hand painted using fermented clay as a resist and therefore each piece is the unique expression of the individual artist. The cloth would make an excellent shawl or throw. Old mud cloth textiles are extremely rare and almost impossible to find; virtually all pieces currently on the market are new.

The textile is handwoven in 4 1/2" (11.5cm) wide strips which are machine sewn together to form one large cloth and design is quite minimalist and modern. This piece is in elegant shades of brown/khaki (depending on the light) and tan colored cotton, with light cream colored cotton strips on two sides. The textile is about 36 1/2" (93cm) wide x 60" (153cm) long [it is not a perfect rectangle] with a raw edge. There is one approx. 1" hole at one edge [see photos] and no stains, tears or repairs that I can see. The textile is in very good condition given its age and origins and has been has been woven from raw, unprocessed cotton. The last photo shows a styling idea, not the piece listed for sale.

I recommend hand washing separately with cold water and mild soap. This piece has already been washed and can be used immediately. I have more vintage African textiles so please see my store for other designs. Combined shipping available on all textiles.  Please ask any questions prior to purchase. Thank you!

All vintage items are 100% authentic and have been previously worn, often in a traditional environment. Every effort has been made to describe any significant flaws in both words and pictures in the listings however a certain amount of wear should always be expected. Handmade items should also be expected to contain irregularities which I believe adds to their character and does not detract in any way from their quality.
