SYNOPSIS ....

Tells the story of Australia's Tampa crisis and the political strategy that powered it, and of how John Howard seized on the issue of border protection to bring himself back from the political dead. This book aims to bring to light the manipulation of the public, the mutability of the press and the machinations of one government ....

FROM THE BACK COVER ....

They put lives at risk. They twisted the law. They drew the military into the heart of an election campaign. They muzzled the press. They misused intelligence services, defied the United Nations, antagonised Indonesia and bribed poverty stricken Pacific States. They closed Australia to refugees - and won a mighty election victory. Dark Victory is the secret history of John Howard's campaign against boat people that began with the Tampa and ended ten extraordinary weeks later - after deaths and disappearances, violent confrontations in the Indian Ocean and international uproar - with the Australian people giving John Howard his third, most daring election victory. David Marr and Marian Wilkinson, two of the country's most accomplished investigative journalists, burrow deep into the ways of John Howard's Australia. They reveal a world of ruthlessly skilled politicians, timid bureaucrats, a cowed Opposition, outmanoeuvred top brass, subtle spin doctors - and the men and women arriving on rotten boats who found themselves ambushed at sea by an angry Australia. Dark Victory is a thrilling and provocative account of events that shatter many of the myths Australia has about itself and changed profoundly how Australia is seen in the eyes of the world. gnificant political event in Australia's recent history.

Fascinating  ILLUMINATING read

REVIEWS

COMPELLING AND FRIGHTENING ... I read this book a year ago and found it such a compelling but chilling read. If it were not so painstakingly researched and the history it reports were not so recent and about a time I remember well, it would be possible to read it as a dramatic nail biting political thriller. The characters that as Australians we know so well are depicted so vividly, their actions so self serving and callous. Given the current political climate in Australia and around the world this book should be compulsory reading for all those who wish to not live through another term of the radical right wing conservatives. Frighteningly history is repeating itself with another election soon, the same campaign tactics exploiting the politics of fear and greed are being played out in the Australian media, fueled by now well seasoned politicians and business interests.

Horrifying POWER of Western Democracy ... This is a horrifying account of the ultimate power of the State used to win an election to keep a party in power. Nothing can stand in the way of winning, and the boat people on the Tampa and other boats created an electoral storm.

The more great investigative reporters take the risk to tell us what happened the more we can be aware that it is still happening in different ways.

LUST FOR POWER … Award-winning writer David Marr and investigative journalist Marian Wilkinson burrow deep into the world of spin-doctors, bureaucrats and the military to reveal the whole story, play by play - from the stricken asylum seekers' first sight of the red dot on the horizon that was the Tampa to John Howard singing the national anthem at his election victory celebrations. This book aims to bring to light the manipulation of the public, the mutability of the press and the machinations of one government in its all-consuming lust for power.

WONDERFUL READ  - HARD to find THEORIGINAL EDITION!!! ... A clear unpacking of media and government spin on a topic that many have opinions on, but few understand.

This was an interesting book . .... Made me even more angry at our government than I already was.

MEASURED ACCURATE ACCOUNT ... This was a very truthful and well written story about the events surrounding the boat refugees saved by the Tampa. Marr & Wilkinson manage to weave together two stories, the story of the boat people and the Norwegians who helped them on the one side and the political background surrounding much secrecy and wrong-doing on the other side. Marr & Wilkinson are seasoned investigative journalists who leave the reader without doubt that this is an account based on well-researched facts and truths.

AUSTRALIAN POLITICS  UGH!! .. the contents of  THIS  book were something that every Australian should know:..

Marvellous Reading!
