"A Topographical Map of the County of Sussex Reduced from the Large Survey in Four Sheets, of the Ordnance Survey.
London, Published by Jas. Wyld, Geographer to Her Majesty. 11 &12 Charing Cross, S.W.  1889."

A fine map of the County, published by Wyld using the original engraved plate for the 1799 Gream map which William Faden had published. James Wyld senior had taken over Faden's business in 1823.

It is fascinating to compare this map to two others I am selling on ebay. The first is the original by Thomas Gream, published in 1799. The second is a Wyld map c1850 - 60. This example is even later, 1889, but Wyld (junior) is still using the Faden engraved plate. He has retained most of the title, simply exchanging "Ordnance Survey" for "Thomas Gream" to make it more relevant for late Victorian times.
The map is I believe still handcoloured. Brighton is no longer Brighthelmstone (though the old name is still acknowledged), and the incursion of a strip of land south of Haslemere noted in the earlier map is no longer there.

For the collector of Sussex maps, these three make a fascinating and important trio. I am offering a 15% discount on the total if all three maps are bought together. Please contact me first before buying so that I can adjust the invoice.
This example seems to be particularly rare. I can find no mention of it in Kingsley's comprehensive record of Sussex maps.

Size: unfolded, the map measures 85.5cms x 42cms. The covers measures 15cms x 10.5cms.
Condition: Generally in a good condition, in its original cloth boards. Some wear to the label. Some marks to the very right-hand side of the map itself, and one panel is stained - a result of off-setting from the label inside the covers, when the map was incorrectly folded. The panel contains no map details. The linen backing is in a good condition.

Free postage within the UK. £8.00 to Europe, £12.00 to USA etc.
