FILM SUMMARY
Operation Jaywick was one of the most daring and celebrated special operations in WW II. The plan was audacious and the chances of failure high.
At dawn on 26th September 1943, a series of explosions in Singapore harbour sink or damaged seven Japanese merchant ships. At the same time, six British and Australian commandos paddle their canoes frantically back to an island base across Singapore Strait before daylight reveals them.
This raid was Operation
Jaywick, an audacious plan to penetrate Singapore's harbour defences and damage
Japanese shipping and prestige in South East-Asia. The plan was devised by
Englishman Major Ivan Lyon the previous year, when he came across a former
Japanese fishing boat, the Fukoku Maru during evacuation of Singapore. Lyon
realised the fishing boat could be used to enter Japanese waters where a
raiding party would paddle canoes into the harbour and mine Japanese merchant
ships.
Lyon
sells his plan to a sceptical high command with the assistance of Colonel Mott,
the commander the Allied Z special unit. Lyon assembles a team. Lieutenant
Donald Davidson a piratical English adventurer will be raid commander. Lieutenant Ted Carse an experience mariner will
command the fishing boat, now renamed Krait after the deadly Asian snake.
After a tense passage past
Japanese coastal defences in the Lombok Strait, M. V. Krait drops the raiding
party off at an uninhabited island. Embarking in collapsible canoes, jammed
full with explosive limpet mines, the team paddle fifty miles to a forward
base, from where at night they paddle into Singapore Harbour and attach the
mines to merchant ships. The attack was successful with seven Japanese ships
being sunk or damaged. It was also a tremendous blow to Japanese prestige in
South – East Asia. Much of the detail of this operation remained classified for
many years.
The Heroes-Series was the highest rating series in
British TV history when it aired in 1989 being viewed by some 15 million viewers.
It was exceptionally well accepted when aired in Australia. In 1991 the
mini-series was cut down to 90 minute TV movie but don’t worry when you buy
from us you receive the full 197 minute, digitally enhanced edition. Twice the
value!
The series was largely filmed on the Hawkesbury River and Brisbane Water
(N.S.W). The series was not fictionalised, it is factual, true Australian military
history presented in an enjoyable format.
Channel Seven funded the sequel, Heroes II The Return which dealt with Operation
Rimau, This was a second attempt at sinking Japanese shipping in Singapore
Harbour, it shows how even the best planned military Operation can go
tragically wrong... See our eBay store for
further details and the newly released Heroes II – The Return – Operation
Rimau.
