Bodega Number 2

Corkscrew

Bodega corkscrews were produced in Germany in the late 1890's and the early 1900's.  Examples of Bodega corkscrews are shown in most corkscrew reference books such as "Mechanical Corkscrews" Wallis, "Ultimate Corkscrew Book" Bull, and others.  But, we have been unable to locate another example of this particular variant.

This corkscrew has a cage that is marked "2 Bodega" on both sides. No other markings are found.  The corkscrew appears to have been manufactured of nickel plated steel.

The cage measures about 3 1/4" high.  The shank and worm portion is 5 3/4" in length.  The handle is about 2 7/8" long and is permanently captured in the threaded portion of the shank.  The handle collar rotates to lock the at the end of the shank while sinking the worm into the cork.  When operated, the shank and worm has a travel of about 1 3/4".

The Bodega corkscrew has wear consistent with its age but shows no evidence of damage or repair.  The nickel plating is worn in a number of places and shows oxidation as shown in the photos.  The worm is unbent and is complete.
