some history :
Ferrania and 3M are two different companies, nevertheless, 3M, that stands for “Minnesota, Mining and Manufacturing Company” bought Ferrania in 1964. They produced this film, but also other films such as Scotch and Solaris.
3M doesn’t really have its roots on photography, they are more like a multinational conglomerate that produces health care, industry and consumer goods.
Ferrania on the other side was always related to photographic material. It was founded in 1923 in a town with the same name and they produced goods such as film, paper and cameras.
In 1932 it was acquired by the Milanese photographic plate manufacturer Cappelli and became Cappelli-Ferrania, and Tensi, another local photographic plate manufacturer, also joined in, and in 1938 they went back to call themselves just Ferrania once again.
In 1996 the films and data storage division was spun off from 3M and it became Imation, on the other hand, Ferrania was bought by Schroder Ventures in 1999 and sold to the Gruppo Messina 2000 and renamed Ferrania Imaging Tecnology and they reintroduced Ferrania brand once again, however the production of photographic film ended in 2009 when the market heavily transitioned to digital. The company was re-founded in 2013 as FILM Ferrania s.r.l..
