TAKEN BY THE ENEMY THE BLUE AND THE GRAY SERIES BY OLIVER OPTIC NEAR FINE - CONDITION Handsome, Blue/Gray Cover Design with Union and Confederate Medals Double-Frontispiece Illustrations Original, Clean, Solid Binding, Antique Book HANDSOMELY PUBLISHED AND ADORNED BY LEE AND SHEPARD PUBLISHERS, BOSTON, IN 1889 Captain Passford had not a particle of the foam generated by the excitement of the times, and he sincerely hoped he should have no occasion to use the guns which it had cost him so much trouble to procure. Fort Morgan was on one side of the entrance to the bay, and Fort Games on the other side. He had seen a paragraph in one of his papers, to the effect that one or both of these works had been garrisoned by Confederate troops, and it was not likely to be an easy matter to get into the bay. As it looked to the owner and the commander, the only way to accomplish this feat was by running the gauntlet of both forts, which were just three nautical miles apart. This book is written by William Taylor Adams (1822-1897), under the pseudonym “Oliver Optic.” Adams was a noted academic, author, and Massachusetts State Legislator. THIS BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE CONDITION The original, 1889, antique book is in excellent overall condition. The book is handsomely bound in blue/gray covers with two images of gold-colored medals, one each from Federal and Confederate armies; sharp, gold and black spine lettering; and decorative covers. The exterior has no bumping, but has mild rubbing and some soiling to the cover. The spine lettering remains bright and sharp. The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent overall condition, but a few pages have foxing on them, although most are fine. The book has a prior-owner name and date (1888) written in pencil on the front end page as shown. It has no other writing. The book has no pasteboards, stamps or other markings. It is not an ex-library book. The end pages have age toned. The book has solid binding throughout; it has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine. The book is illustrated throughout. 344 pages plus 8 pages of publisher advertisements. Overall a nice condition, antique book on the Civil War.
