Exquisite Polia Pillin Original Oil on Paper Painting, Abstract Rider, c. 1960s

This is a fabulous original oil on paper painting by the noted California painter and ceramicist Polia Pillin (1909–1992). One of the best from my collection.

It features a very loosely painted, heavily abstracted figure of a horse and rider in very colorful, blended pigments, with areas of sgraffito and black.

The technique is very unusual on this painting. The base has been painted and sgraffitoed using the monotype process, then overpainted in some areas to create the final image. Nice effect, extremely well executed.

Signed lower right in pen: "Polia Pillin".

Image dimensions (mat) are 15-1/2" wide x 11-3/4" high; the frame dimensions are 24-3/4" wide x 21-1/2" high x 7/8" thick.

Framed in a gorgeous distressed gold leaf custom frame by noted California master framer Shawn Speck, with acid free materials under UV resistant glass. The frame is in excellent condition; it's ready to hang.

This painting is in excellent vintage condition, with no moisture damage, buckling, tears or other problems. It's undergone professional conservation to remove and neutralize age darkening to the paper, and to arrest and stabilize a few areas of bleeding in the black pigment.
