Parker's Virginia battery was a significant Confederate unit that participated in every important engagement fought by the Army of Northern Virginia. The unit was active at Fredericksburg, Manassas, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Appomattox and more; its all here. The unit was captained by William Watts Parker, M.D., and captained by him for several years. It fought in "nineteen pitched battles," the first of which was the at Second Manassas, and the last of which took place near Appomattox.
Parker's Battery completed its organization at Richmond, Virginia, in March 1862. It served in S. D. Lee's, E. P. Alexander's, and J. C. Huger's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia. This unit was comprised of men raised in the Richmond, Virginia area and was mustered into service on March 14th, 1862. They were led into battle by Captain (Doctor) William Watts Parker, who, prior to military service, was engaged in the practice of medicine.
