Stencils are really simple to use and make a fabulous, unique and creative alternative to wall stickers or wallpaper. Unlike stickers you'll be able to paint any colour you like, position where you like and use and reuse the stencils as many times as you need to get the look you want. Stencils won't peel off either so they're safe for use in bedrooms and nurseries as well as the playroom, oh and don't forget that stencils can also be used to paint furniture and fabrics too so why not create some scatter cushions or brighten up some furniture!

With this pack you'll receive all the stencils you need to create a beautiful Tree mural. The main tree should be painted first, simply apply stencil number one to the wall, paint and remove. Line up stencil number two, paint and then finally stencils number three and four. Once you've stencilled the tree use the additional stencils to add leaves and details.

We'll include pictorial instructions with your stencils.

How to stencil the Tree

There are 4 stencils which make up the whole tree. You'll need to paint each one individually.

The stencils that are included in the pack and how they fit together.

Step 1 - Use the trunk stencil first. Position the stencil on the wall and secure. The trunk is central to the design. Paint the stencil then remove it.

Step 2 - Position the largest stencil above the painted trunk. There should not be any gap between what you've already painted and the branches on the sheet. Secure the stencil and paint it. Remove the stencil.

 Painting sheets a 1 and 2 first

Step 3 and 4 - Repeat the process with the tree sides, lining up the stencil against previously painted branches.

 Painting sheets 3 and 4.

All done. You can use the stencils as many times as you like. Stencil a whole forest if you dare!

The next step is the best step! Adding leaves and details. You can use the stencils as many times as you like to get the look you like. And you can choose any colours you like to match your room scheme!

Why use stencils?

Stencils form an easy to use, cost effective and creative solution for decorating walls and all other surfaces in the home. More versatile than stickers as you'll be able to use your stencils again and again, as many times as you need, and on any surface too including fabric. More cost effective than wallpaper as one stencil can be used to decorate a whole room! Stencils can be used to create coordinating fabrics for curtains, blinds, bedding and cushions as well as decorating furniture and floors. Paint your stencils any colour you like, or change your mind, paint over them and try a different colour! Stencils are perfect for all your upcycling and rejuvenating projects. Stencils will suit your personal style as the colours you choose, type of paint, application technique as well as the stencil design and how you repeat it, all add up to a completely personalised finish, unique to you.

Not sure what you'll need or where to start?

As well as a stencil you'll need some paint, a brush or roller to apply the paint and some tape or spray to hold the stencil in place whilst you paint it.

Paint - all types of paint can be used for stencilling, choose a thick paint like acrylic paint, artists acrylics, chalk paint or thick emulsion paint work well on walls. Of course you could also use specialist paints and finishes like wood stains and fabric paint too, it just depends on what is most suitable for your project.

Brushes & rollers - Stencil brushes have a flat end to allow for close contact with the surface you are stencilling and therefore less paint bleed beneath the stencil. Rollers, the dense foam kind used for gloss painting, are brilliant for larger areas and save a lot of time (and patience!). Pieces of sponge can be used also, again, it really depends on stencil size and detail, the area to be stencilled and the amount of time you have to complete the job.

Stencil tape & spraymount/spray adhesive - Low tack tape is best, or you can use normal masking tape which has been blotted on clothes to remove some of the tack. Spraymount is widely available from art shops, DIY stores and stationers, they do vary so always follow manufacturers instructions. The most important thing is to make sure that the stencil stays put whilst you paint it, a second pair of hands works too!

Practice with some scrap paper first to get an idea of how much paint to use, less is most definitely more. For symmetrical stencilling start in the middle and work outwards in all directions. For larger areas you may have to mark a level line across the wall with removable chalk to ensure a straight line to work to. You'll find etched marks on some of our repeating pattern stencils which helps with pattern matching. Sometimes it may help to have a second or third copy of the stencil so you can get a friend to help or for keeping colours separate, you'll need to have one brush or roller for each colour you use.

The method is very simple..

For guaranteed great results these are our top tips...

If your stencil has been rolled during delivery - unroll it asap, re-roll stencils the other way to remove the bend.

Use a really thick paint - the thicker the better to ensure less bleeding and better paint coverage.

Make sure your brushes are clean and dry before you use them, use a separate one for each colour you're stencilling.

Dont overload the brush/roller with too much paint - this will cause blobbing, bleeding and paint running behind the stencil.

HAPPY STENCILLING :)
