SSV
and FFG-7 Oliver Hazard Perry Art Print is from an original
watercolor painting on a nautical chart by the Artist, William B.
MacGregor Jr. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FFG-7 was the lead ship in the Oliver Hazard Perry class of guided missile frigate designed in the mid-70s as a general purpose escort vessel. The goal was to be bought in large numbers and replace the WW2 era destroyers and 60’s Knox-class frigates. She was named for Oliver Hazard Perry who was a naval hero and was victorious in the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie. The first of 51 Oliver Hazard Perry frigates entered service in 1977 and the last remaining FFG in active service, USS Simpson, was decommissioned in 2015.
The SSV Oliver Hazard Perry is named after RI naval hero of the battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. The ship is Rhode Island’s official sailing vessel and a good will ambassador for RI. The ship is the largest privately owned tall ship and civilian training ship in the USA. Launched in 2015 the Oliver Hazard Perry is the first ocean going full rigged ship to be built in the USA in over 100 years.
Shown in the background is Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. The structure is 352 feet high and was built in 1915 and dedicated in 1931. The memorial is in Put-In-Bay, Lake Erie Ohio.
