Triple bill of Westerns. 'The Missing' (2003), set in 1886, stars Tommy Lee Jones as Samuel Jones, a wanderer who abandoned his family years before to travel with a band of Apaches in New Mexico. Over the years, his conscience eats away at him and he finally resolves to return to the family he left years before. But on arrival at the homestead, he finds his wife long dead and his grown-up daughter Maggie (Cate Blanchett) and her husband Brake (Aaron Eckhart) filled with bitterness about the past, unforgiving and unwelcoming. Amid a tide of recriminations Jones decides to leave the family - but when a band of ruthless bandits ransacks the homestead, killing Maggie's husband and kidnapping her teenage daughter Lily (Evan Rachel Wood), he becomes Maggie's only hope. Can he track down the bandits before they disappear with Lily into Mexico? In 'Silverado' (1985), also set in the 1880s, various pioneers try to establish a future in the American West as four strangers shoot it out in the crooked town of Silverado. Every Western set-piece is in this first major Western to come out of Hollywood for many years, starring Kevin Kline and Danny Glover and with John Cleese as an English sheriff. In 'The Quick and the Dead' (1995), Mayor Herod (Gene Hackman) has turned the town of Redemption from a friendly and safe place into a haven for criminals and thugs. In return for keeping these men on the streets, Herod receives fifty cents out of every dollar they make. Every year he holds a quick-draw shoot-out contest with a huge cash prize as bait. However, the only winner always seems to be the local mayor - until one year strapping female gunslinger Ellen (Sharon Stone) arrives in town to challenge him.
