"The Standard Bearer (Die Fahnenwacht), Deutsche Lyra No. 3 sung at the Philharmonic, the Ancient Concerts, and Jullien's Concerts: Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, by Herr Pischek."
A genuine Victorian music sheet with an illustrated cover, published by Jullien & Co at the Royal Musical Conservatory in London.

A typical Jullien music sheet, similar in style to that titled "The Brides of Venice" (see my other items), with ornate gold decoration surrounding the Brandard lithograph in the centre.
Louis-Antoine Jullien came to London in 1840, to escape his French creditors. Always a flamboyant character (as the cover of this sheet suggests), he over-reached himself by putting on an opera (Pietro il Grande) in 1852 at Covent Garden that was expensive and a complete failure. it ruined him: by 1859 he was back in France where he was imprisoned, and he died in an asylum in 1860.

The British Museum has a fine engraved portrait of Herr Johann Baptist Pischek, the singer, which was published by Jullien in 1846 (perhaps a clue as to the date of this music sheet?). There are 4 copies listed of this edition on Worldcat which loosely date it 185?

Peter Lindpainter (1791 - 1856) was a German composer based in Stuttgart from 1819.

Size and number of pages: the sheet measures approx. 35cms x 24.5cms. With 6 pages of music (see condition report).
Condition: Disbound from an album, and cropped. A little stained around the edges, but generally the sheet is in a good condition. Cover loose. Music paginated 12 - 17 but I think it is complete (this is number 3 in the Deutsche Lyra series).  Please study the photographs.

There are, in my view, a number of reasons for valuing Illustrated Music Sheets. They are often of historical interest, marking special events, or illustrating historical figures. They may be of topographical interest. They may give an insight into Victorian values, often the humour of the time, or perhaps simply the fashions and designs found in their houses and clothing. Music illustration was always at the forefront of advances in publishing, and the covers are therefore of interest too in seeing the development of colour printing, as well as typographic and layout fashions. Sometimes, even the music is of interest! I will be offering a huge collection on ebay. Please see my other items.

Postage: unfortunately, most music sheets are just too large for 'Large Letter' prices. So £4.00 within the UK. £10.00 to Europe, £15.00 to USA, etc. I will always combine shipping costs for more than one item purchased. Please purchase the items you want, but delay paying for them. I can then adjust the invoice accordingly. If you do pay for them, I can always refund any excess via paypal.
I have other antique items in my ebay shop - antique art, prints, music, maps, books etc. Please see my other items.
