Information on the death of Francois Biondo:

Fort Carré, Antibes, September 23, 1944 …

In Antibes, when we talk of 23 September 1944, the remorse erects a wall of shame between historical truth and the interpretation we have done.  That day, ten Antibois-eight men and two women - are killed inside the Fort Carré. Apparently shot in a hurry, possible victims of blind vengeance and denunciation.

The two men and eight women suspected of sympathy with the enemy were shot that day. Three family members want their rehabilitation. The case, known as the Tragedy of Fort Carré, was never discussed openly…Today, now three of them calling for their parents died on that fateful September 23, a posthumous rehabilitation.

“For some years I envisage such an approach”, says Jean-Claude Bonhomme. I think a plaque at the entrance of Fort Square, in memory of the ten people shot that day - which my maternal grandfather, Francois Biondo - would be the least of it.

According to his grandson, Biondo, a well known photographer in Antibes, was a "victim of his profession. That's what my mother always told me and nobody ever came to contradict his statements. He worked for the l'Eclaireur de Nice  and was cataloged as "dangerous fascist", probably because he was born in Sicily. "
