I created these 3.5" and 5.25" drive bay caddies to allow swapping of SATA drives on a system that uses PATA/IDE hard drives.  This makes it simple to have dedicated drives for different operating systems and to easily add files to systems without network connectivity.  The 2.5" SATA drive sticks out about an inch so there is room to easily grab the drive.

You have an option for the opening on the front of the drive bay.  Modern 2.5" SATA drives are typically 7mm tall, while older drives were both 9mm and 12.5mm in height.  You can select a smaller opening for aesthetics, or a larger one for more compatibility.  

On the back of the adapter is a jumper to switch between master and slave.  These adapters do not support hot swapping (PATA did not support hot swapping, it was not part of the IDE specification), so you should power off your system before swapping the drive.  

The right side of the 3.5" dock is missing the front screw hole to accommodate the drive.  The other two screw holes standard to hard drives are available for mounting.  On the left side the standard 3 holes are available to secure the dock.
