In 1938, the founder and head of the company Ettore Bugatti (Bugatti) created the Bugatti aircraft design department, which immediately took on the ambitious task of designing and building a high-speed fighter. Then the plans were adjusted to create a racing aircraft with an eye to winning the prestigious German Cup. During its design, a number of non-standard design solutions and novelties in the field of aircraft construction were implemented. The Second World War prevented the implementation of plans to build the aircraft. When the Germans entered Paris in June 1940, the prototype aircraft was about 80% complete, and it was decided to hide it. After the liberation of France, the plane was remembered, but in post-war France there was no time for racing planes. The semi-assembled prototype of the aircraft was bought by a professional Bugatti car restorer Ray Jones in 1970 and shipped to the United States. There, the engines were removed from him for use in cars. Later, the plane got to Peter Williams, who sent the half-disassembled car to Connecticut, where it began to be restored. The aircraft is now on display at the Oshkosh Air Museum (Wisconsin).
