It was bound to come sooner of later - Assassin's Creed has finally landed in the age of Vikings. Valhalla starts, however, with a more-involved-than-usual modern day story which sees Layla Hassan, the protagonist previously seen in Origins and Odyssey, tasked with saving the world and only a set of bones to do it with. She dives into the animus to travel back to 873 AD and assume the role of Eivor, promptly setting sail to England to do what vikings do. Navigating a complex web of alliances, Eivor takes on a number of missions that has them exploring England to engage in brutal combat, sneaky stealth and, of course, a fair amount of parkour. The structure sees you taking on a series of separate missions that feel almost episodic, but they all loop back to the same themes of fate (and whether it can be escaped). More importantly, they all continue your RPG-style progression, shaping both Eivor and their skill set. The constellation-like skill tree offers up a lot of flexibility, with nodes that cross between branches and the ability to easily redistribute your skill points if you're not happy with how your abilities are shaping up. Longtime fans of the Assassin's Creed series are in for a particular treat, with Valhalla tying together many elements of arcane law and plot threads from past games. Newcomers shouldn't be put off, however - the game still very much works as its own game and offers a satisfyingly chewy experience in its own right.
