THE BRITISH POUND STERLING IS THE CURRENCY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM, WITH SOME DEPENDENCIES PRODUCING THEIR OWN LOCAL VERSION BASED ON THE BRITISH MODEL AND OTHERS PRODUCING SEPARATE CURRENCY PEGGED IN PARITY WITH BRITISH STERLING. IT IS THE FOURTH MOST TRADED CURRENCY IN THE WORLD.

IN 1552, DURING THE REIGN OF EDWARD VI, NEW SILVER COINAGE WAS INTRODUCED THAT WAS STRUCK IN A STANDARD STERLING SILVER (.925 FINENESS) IN AN ATTEMPT TO REFORM THE DEBASEMENT THAT HAD OCCURED UNDER HENRY VIII AND ALSO EARLIER IN EDWARD'S REIGN. BOTH GOLD AND SILVER FLUCTUATED IN THE NEXT CENTURY, AND WORLD TRADE CREATED THE PROBLEM OF SILVER LEAVING BRITAIN TO PAY FOR OVERSEAS GOODS, MOSTLY TO THE ORIENT, AND GOLD COMING INTO BRITIAN, PUTTING THE REALM ON AN UNOFFICIAL GOLD STANDARD AND QUITE SILVER SHY. IN 1694, DURING THE REIGN OF WILLIAM III, THE BANK OF ENGLAND WAS ESTABLISHED (AND THE BANK OF SCOTLAND IN 1695). IN 1706/1707, THE TREATY OF UNION, MERGING THE KINGDOMS OF ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND OFFICIALLY INTO THE KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN, ALSO UNIFIED THE CURRENCY, THE ENGLISH POUND AND THE POUND SCOTS WOULD BE REPLACED WITH THE POUND STERLING OF THE UNITED KINGDOM. IRELAND WOULD FOLLOW SUIT IN 1826.

THE LION AND KEY DESIGN ON THE REVERSE ECHOES BACK TO THE NUMISMATIC HERITAGE OF GIBRALTAR. THE IMAGE OF THE LION HOLDING A KEY WAS FIRST USED ON COPPER TOKENS PRIVATELY ISSUED IN GIBRALTAR BY MERCHANT ROBERT KEELING AROUND 1810. THE KEY IS FROM THE COAT OF ARMS OF GIBRALTAR, WHICH IS SUSPENDED BENEATH A THREE TOWERED HERALDIC CASTLE. THE TRANFERENCE OF THE KEY IMAGE TO THE LION WOULD SUGGEST AN ALLUSION TO BRITISH SUPREMACY OVER THE ROCK OF GIBRALTAR.
