It also contains a roster of the troops in the 5th South Carolina Infantry, with detailed Civil War service information on each soldier, including a transcription of his service record. The roster is alphabetical for easy use. This is an excellent genealogical resource for those seeking information on the Civil War service of a member of the unit. The 5th Regiment South Carolina Infantry (also called Jenkin's Rifles) was organized about April 13, 1861, for twelve months and mustered into the service of the Confederate States June 4, 1861. The unit participated in the defense of Charleston before moving to Virginia to become a part of General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. It fought at the Battle of Manassas and was disbanded at the end of their twelve-month enlistment. On April 23, 1862, most of the men organized in a new regiment for the duration of the war, under Colonel Jenkins, composed of men who had formerly served in the twelve-month units of the 5th, 6th and 9th Regiments as well as new recruits. The new unit was assigned to Jenkins Brigade of Anderson’s Division of Lee’s army. The unit fought at the Battle of Seven Pines, Gaines’ Mill, and Frayser’s Farm before being transferred to Kemper’s Division of Longstreet’s command. If fought at the Battle of Second Manassas, South Mountain, and Sharpsburg, before being attached to Pickett’s Division. The unit fought at the Battle of Fredericksburg, participated in Longstreet’s detached Suffolk Campaign, and was moved to Tennessee. It fought at the Battles of Chattanooga, Wauhatchie, and Knoxville, before returning to Lee’s army in Virginia. Re-attached to Bratton’s Brigade, Field’s Division, of First Corps, it fought at the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Drewery’s Bluff, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Fussell’s Mill and was detached and ordered to Petersburg. If fought at Fort Harrison and New Market Road, Darbytown, and participated in the Appomattox Campaign. On April 9, 1865, the unit surrendered with Bratton's Brigade at Appomattox, Virginia.  This first edition book is brand new, unread, and in pristine condition.
