It was in an old truck in a Tennessee barn that a relative of Mr. Holland discovered material which has made this book both the definitive biography of John Hunt Morgan (one of the most important generals of the War Between the Stats) and a vivid account of the war from the Southern point of view. In that truck were found: official communication between Morgan and Richmond and between Morgan and his superiors and subordinates, bills for supplies for the troops, official orders and proclamations, copies of the Vidette and other newspapers of the time, the letters Morgan wrote to his wife and hers to him as well as many family letters from other parts of the country – first-hand source material which has never been rivaled.
Drawing from this store, Cecil Holland presents a picture of the struggle for Kentucky and Tennessee as scene by the men and women who shared in it. He recaptures the dangers and anxieties of those years, the gallantry and courtship interspersed with swift attacks and sudden defeats, the tempo of a conflict so different from modern warfare, the opportunities for individual initiative and distraction, the old mixture of feelings toward the enemy, the prominent display of chivalry (especially in the presence of the ladies), the whole impact of the war upon solider and civilian alike. And the reader learns much of the Southern people’s hope and fears, and their fierce loyalty to the secession movement.
