An unfortunate collector sent this pretty large cent to NGC hoping for a gem grade, and got a rude surprise. While it is certainly possible that this coin had an ancient cleaning like most old type coins, there are no hairlines or disturbances as expected for that designation. The strike is tremendous and the surfaces choice, with liberal traces of original red remaining on reverse.
