The title page of the first folio Geneva Bible

Description: A scarce title page of the second edition, first folio 1562 Geneva Bible.

This leaf has been matted and custom framed with a plaque mounted below the leaf. Title page on verso with The Name and Order of All The Bookes… on recto. The recto is not visible since the leaf is framed.

This inviting title page of the groundbreaking Geneva Bible is the same type as issued in the 1560 First Edition quarto and unique to these two editions. Features a woodcut of a candlestick and citation from Matthew 5:15, “No man lighteth a candell, for to put it under a bushell, but upon the candlestick.” Also known as the ‘Whig Bible’ for the curious error in Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the place makers” instead of peace makers.

Size: Leaf (14” X 9”), Frame (22.75” X 17”)

References: Herbert 116, STC 2095.

Note: Eighteen years after the impressive folio Great Bible was published, a small octavo Bible was published in Geneva. This 1557 New Testament marked the beginning of a Bible that, according to Cleland Boyd McAfee, “drove the Great Bible off the field by sheer power and excellence.” The Bible of the people, the Geneva Bible was known as the first study Bible with its famous Geneva notes becoming so popular that they were inserted into seven subsequent editions of the King James Bibles in the seventeenth century. The Bible was printed in a Roman font that was easy to read, with woodblock illustrations that invited the reader into copious study, and in a comfortable quarto size that made it comfortable for transport. The Geneva Bible remained the unrivaled translation for English speaking people well into the 1600s until it was finally pushed out by political and economic pressure.

About Certificates of Authenticity

The ease with which anyone can make a “Certificate of Authenticity” renders them worth no more than the paper they are printed on. While we do not offer hollow documents, we do stand behind the authenticity of our leaves. We are scrupulous in our sourcing, usually salvaging leaves directly from damaged or incomplete Bibles. We never take apart complete books. Rather than a certificate, your purchase will include a description of your leaf.
