REV: CRUDE SURROUNDING OUTER LEGEND AND OBSCURED FIGURE (BISHOP OR EMPEROR?) WITH PARTIAL MIDDLE (TORSO OR SHIELD?) VISIBLE. RIGHT HAND (HOLDING STAFF/SWORD?) OBJECT.

THE PRINCE-ARCHBISHIPS OF SALZBURG WERE THE TEMPORAL RULERS OF THE CITY. THEY WERE ALSO PRIMAS GERMANIAE OR PRIMATES (FIRST BISHOPS) OF GERMANY (THE EMPIRE), WITH THE RIGHT TO PRESIDE OVER ITS PRINCES AND BE THE POPE'S FIRST CORRESPONDENT. EBERHARD II von REGENSBURG WAS THE FIRST PRINCE-ARCHBISHOP, MADE A PRINCE OF THE EMPIRE IN 1213, AND GAVE TOWN PRIVILEGES TO FRIESACH IN 1215. UNDER EBERHARDT II, FRIESACH BECAME THE SECOND LARGEST CITY IN THE DIOCESE OF SALZBURG, AND THE MINT WAS ESTABLISHED PRODUCING SILVER PENNIES (SOMETIMES CALLED "WIENER PFENNIGS") BASED ON THE COLOGNE MONETARY STANDARD. THESE CRUDE HAND STRUCK COINS OFTEN LEFT THE DETAILS ON ONE SIDE UNRECOGIZABLE.
