A Map of the County of Kent, drawn from the Topographical Survey taken by order of the Honourable Board of Ordnance under the Direction of Lt. Colonel Wm. Mudge, Roy. Arty., FRS, reduced from the Large Map of Four Sheets by a scale of One Inch to Two Statute Miles."
With the publisher's details below: "Published by Jas. Wyld, Geographer to Her Majesty, Charing Cross East, and Model of the Earth, Leicester Square, London."

A splendid large map of the County of Kent, with lovely original handcolouring for which the publisher, James Wyld was well-known. The reference to "Model of the Earth" dates the map to c1850: his model was a feature of the Great Exhibition of 1851, and it remained at Leicester Square until 1862.

The map was in fact originally issued in 1807 by William Faden. It was Faden who had published the Ordnance Survey map of Kent in 1801 - the first ever Ordnance Survey map. Wyld senior, an employee of Faden, took over Faden's plates on his retirement, and Wyld junior continued to use them well into the second half of the 19th century. In this case, he has added railway details to the original map.

A very fine, large 19th century map of the county.
