HK 400 XM 3head TOTL Cassette Deck. This is a Beautiful Top of The Line Cassette deck from Harmon Kardon. 3 head, total logic controlled, LED VU meters, dampened loading door. This was part of the "ULTRAWIDE BANDWIDTH" product line, this was very popular as the size was very small compared to power output. This unit match's up to the entire separates line as well as the VXI line of recivers. The price in 1980 was MSRP 680.00. But was sold as 599.00 when it could be found. As a top of the line, not all retailers carried this model.  It had many advanced features, as well as some of the old mechanical mainstays of 70s cassette decks. The tape transport is full logic, meaning it is not mechanical controlled, all the buttons are soft touch. A very new concept in all audio products. Both Dolby B and Dolby HX PRO noise reduction. It handed all three tape configuration. Normal, ferrite chrome and metal, the unit has super Hard Sendust alloy tape heads. Considered the best for full frequency response back in 1980. I could go on , but let's just say this in the best deck until the "CD " line of decks(CD 491 eventually replaced this unit in 83) . There are 4 models in the "ULTRAWIDE BANDWIDTH" product line.

I have a completion report by the tech (who was an authorized service center owner back in the 80 s. He did a beautiful job repair ing this unit.  I had this unit as my personal deck for about 10years. But I have moved on to reel to reel.

He was a smoker of some type of Tabacco products (not cigarettes, the smell was very different from that ) it has been cleaned inside and out as much as can  be done. But as a precaution, I must caution any purchasers that if you are sensative to old Tabacco oder or allergic, do not buy this unit. All refurbished unit are sold AS IS , no warranty , all sales finial. Why, simple , Fraud, to many people take parts out of these factory spec units, and try to return them. I only sell units that are factory spec or as close to it as possible.
