GEMSTONES CARE
Gemstones
are your precious possessions. They are the best heirlooms you can hand
down to your children and grandchildren. Take proper care of them and
their luster will last for generations. All precious and semi-precious
gemstones should be cleaned frequently. But you should understand a
little more about different gemstones and their nature before cleaning
them. Some stones are of a sensitive nature. Research & learn how to
clean them before attempting to do so at home (for example, you
shouldn’t rinse treated stones or soft stones like turquoise, pearl and
amber as it may damage their polish and shine). It is usually safe to
clean most precious and semi precious gemstones (except moonstone and
emerald as they are prone to damage in ultrasonic) using ultrasonic
cleaners however there is no need of any special appliances to clean
them. Most stones respond well to mild detergent and warm water.
Gemstones and precious metal jewelry can be cleaned using warm water and
mild dish-washing detergent. Scrub gently with a soft bristled brush.
Rinse the gemstones with cool, fresh water. Dry with a soft lint-free
cloth. Wrap the jewelry or gemstones in a soft cloth before storing or
use a fabric-lined storage box. Always rinse your gemstones jewellery in
a bowl of water. Sometimes the stones on a piece of jewelry become
loose in their settings. Rinsing them in a sink or wash basin poses a
risk of losing such gems. Always store gemstones jewelry separately to
prevent any accidental damage. All gemstones should be protected from
extreme heat as it can cause fracture in the stones. Also, the use of
harsh chemicals and cleaners should be avoided. The harsh rays of the sun
can also be harmful to not just your skin but your stone jewellery as
well. Heat and light can impact a precious stone’s color and
durability. Direct sunlight can fade a lot of stones, including
amethysts and smoky quartz. Some gems like pearl and ivory run the risk
of getting bleached due to sunlight. Heat can dry up the natural
moisture of some gemstones. Sudden temperature changes and extreme heat
can also cause a fracture in some gemstones. So, always take care to
keep your gemstones away from sunlight and heat. If you love swimming,
make sure that you remove your jewellery before diving into a swimming
pool. The chlorinated water can do much damage to these beauties. You
should keep your gemstone jewellery away from any household item
containing bleach, chlorine, and other strong oxidizers.
