Evans Ceramics was a northern California art cottage success story--at its height employing between 14-20 potters all working under the direction of master ceramicist Anthony (Tony) Evans (1942-2009). The workshop was supplying pottery even to Macy's Department Stores! Evans built his business in Healdsburg, CA, as part of an early 1970s pottery migration to that town. This large modernist seed pot form vase was created and signed by Evans himself, and the number on the bottom would have been referenced in an accompanying signed and numbered certificate, which I DO have. The color is subtle yet rich, a blend of blues/teal and rose/pink/mauve. The areas where blues move into pinks has an almost gray tone. The finish varies from lava to light sandy patches, with just a hint of smooth, hard-as-glass, high gloss interior finish. These textures and colors are the result of removing the vessel from a 2000 degree F. kiln and plunged into a smoke chamber which changes the texture and finish dramatically. The piece is big enough to command a centerpiece spot. There is some scuffing that if you look closely for it you will find, and I have photographed that up close. However, given the finish of the piece, any scuffs do seem to blend in.

Measures about 8.5" tall by about 13" in diameter. Weighs a whopping five pounds unpacked! The bottom carries Evans signature in permanent marker. No chips nor cracks. Will be reinforced for shipping.

Substantial piece by a master ceramicist.
