Antique Silver Ethiopian Coptic Christian Mequamia Handle Prayer Stick / Staff. This is a very heavy, antique silver mequamia. A Mequamia is a T-shaped religious walking stick that was used by priests for multiple purposes, including as a walking stick, a rest, and a chin rest during long services. It was even used to keep the rhythm during musical services. They have long been used in Ethiopia by Coptic priests, and I attached a photo of Saint Yared from 15th century artwork from Axum holding a mequamia.

This mequamia top has dark patina given its age, but where the silver has been hammered is still shiny. There are some brass decorative elements.

Weight is 184 grams. Alloy is high content silver. While not sterling, given the age and history of the item, this piece was likely produced by melting Maria Theresa thalers. Height is approximately 16.5 cm.

This mequamia top is very old and was estimated to be approximately 500 years old by the last dealer who owned it who spent decades in the industry. Wear evident in the silver's patina and texture.
