ANTIQUE BRONZE SINHAMU OR POWDER CONTAINER WITH SHAPE OF STUPA – NEPAL – FIRST HALF 20th C.
This nice ritual powder container, covered by a five-tiered parasol (sometimes wrongly called stupa), originates from Nepal.
The container is called in Nepal: Sinhamu. Essentially he is a powder (like tika) or paste container used in worship, rituals and puja rites.
The sinhamu as sacred symbol can also be seen on both Nepalese and Tibetan altars in temples or houses. Hindus and Buddhists usually place the sinhamu with a mirror encircled by flames (in Nepal called Jwālā Nhāykan and in Tibet called Melong) on the altar.
The painting of Goddess Lakshmi in Newar tradition is shown holding a jwālā nhāykan in her right hand and a sinhamu in the left hand. These two ritual objects stand for prosperity and good fortune and are necessary for many ceremonies in Newar society.
This fine ritual container, covered by a five-tiered parasol, shows a very aesthetic stupa shape and floral decoration. He has a decorated round stand. Inside are traces of red ritual powder (tikka).
