ANTIQUE WOODEN DECORATED CASE WITH TWO SCALES OPIUM BALANCE – BURMA (MYANMAR) – FIRST HALF 20^th C.

This antique two scales balance originates from Burma.

Not only opium but especially all kinds of goods in small quantities such as herbs, powders, medicines and so on were weighed with this balance. The goods were measured by a beam hung with two baskets or trays. The correct weight was placed in one basket and the other basket filled with the desired material until the two baskets balanced.

This balance having two brass scales is protected by a wooden turtle shaped case with a horizontally rotating lid. The nicely carved lid depicts a turtle, geometrical patterns (representing the shell of the turtle) and leaf designs.

Age: first half 20^th C.

Size: a) balance: beam 14.2 cm long, diameter brass scales 5.6 cm.

b) case: 8.5 cm high, 24 cm long.

Total weight: 215 gr.

Condition: This case with balance is in good condition taking into account its age. Good signs of use and age. Look carefully to the pictures, which are an integral part of the description.
