ANTIQUE WOODEN SQUATTING NAKED MAN SCULPTURE – NUU-CHAH-NULTH (NOOTKA) PEOPLE - BRITISH COLUMBIA (CANADA) - 19^th C

This wooden statue originates from British Columbia (Canada).

This rare statue is carved by the Nuu-Chah-Nulth (also called Nootka) people, meaning “all along the mountains”. The Nootka people compose a single cultural group of nineteen different nations, each with their own territory, hereditary chief and distinct dialect. They live at the West Coast of Vancouver Island.

The wooden figure is made of the acer circinatum (vine maple), a species of maple native to western North America.

This figure depicts a squatting naked man, his long tongue hanging out of his mouth, both arms stretching up with his hands upon his head, showing his genitals. This sculpture displays the typical characteristics of Nootka sculpture, such as the squatting position, the hawk nose and the almond shaped eyes. This beautiful and smooth sculpture shows a beautiful patina.
