This is a really interesting Black Palm and plant fiber Frame Headdress used for dancing from the people along the May River in Papua New Guinea. This frame is like a building block on which they can create their own their own individual and stylized headdresses. The feather are attached to this bark or a palm cloth base. These magnificent constructions are dense with colorful feathers from cassowary birds, black iridescent rooster tail feathers and all the other exotic colored birds feathers; as well as ,Red Abrus seeds, Nassa shells, Flower Beetles  and so many other wonderful items. Making a headdress is one of the first tasks that a man undertakes on coming of age, and is a long-term undertaking, because each man has to comb the forest on his own to find the feathers that will decorate his headdress. Some of these elaborate headdresses can reach four feet tall.  This is a wonderful black Palm hat frame and although it would be exceptional and beautiful once completed, it is rather interesting and lovely just as it is. A great conversation piece and a wonderful  addition to your collection.
