Description

Appearing now as a companion volume, specifically to ’Belgian Military Aviation’, and generally to the other books in this series, ’Dutch Military Aviation’ was originally conceived as the second half of a single volume covering the history of military aviation in the Benelux. Thanks, however, to the energetic efforts of the groups and individuals mentioned below, the amount of information to be included dictated a split into two books, so that each country might be given proper coverage. For readers not familiar with the Midland Counties Publications ’Military Aviation’ series a brief statement of our aims may be in order. This book seeks to present in easy cross-reference format the histories of all aviation units and aircraft types which have served with the Dutch armed forces since their re-formation after the Second World War, and to present an overall picture of the present situation. Technical data which is readily available from such sources as ’Janes’ or ’Observers’ books has been minimised. The presence of a large body of aviation enthusiasts in the Netherlands has been a double-edged weapon for the author during the compilation of this book. Whilst many have willingly provided information from their own researches, the certainty that many more, equally knowledgeable individuals will rapidly find any errors or omissions committed by an unwary Englishman has, to say the least, been a sobering thought. Information on the pages which follow is based on the author’s own records, but these have been augmented in no small measure by several fellow enthusiasts. Principal amongst these is Johan van der Wei, who over many years has provided me with numerous items of information on this and other aviation subjects, and without whose help this book would be significantly thinner. Considerable support has been received from the editorial team of the Dutch amateur aviation magazine ’Flash’ — in particular Gijsbert Hiltermann, Frank Klaasen and Jac. van Tuijn, not to mention their many contributors. Ben Marselis, another long standing correspondent, has been instrumental in seeking out the many items of information which were proving elusive as this book was in its final stages of preparation...
