This book recounts the efforts of the pioneers of aviation who risked their lives and fortunes to accomplish what no man before them had done. Among the many exploits described are the first balloon ascents in the eighteenth century, the struggles of the early aeroplane pilots, the three crossings of the North Atlantic by flying-boat, aeroplane and airship in 1919, the first flights to Melbourne and Cape Town and Amy Johnson’s outstanding solo flight to Australia. There are also accounts of Kingsford Smith’s epic crossing of the Pacific Ocean, the first flights to the Poles, the conquest of Everest by air, Francis Chichester’s solo flight across the Tasman Sea and many other notable events including the feats of the Canadian bush pilots’ in the Northwest Territories.
The photograph on the jacket shows the 1969 replica of the Vickers Vimy, built to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the first direct North Atlantic flight by an aeroplane. A Vimy, also in 1919, made the first flight between the United Kingdom and Australia. (British Aircraft Corporation)
