This superbly - plotted novel takes for its main subject the fate of the fighter arm of the German Air Force in the West between 1939 and 1945.
It starts with a propaganda visit in England in 1938 of a small group of Hitlerjugend - Hitler Youth - heavily indoctrinated with discipline and dedication to the Fatherland. They mingle with their British contemporaries and in particular with the Bristow family. The Bristows are comfortable, upper middle - class, casual and ignorant of politics of war. But Peter Bristow is already flying in his university Auxiliary Air Squadron and the German youth leader is an accomplished glider pilot in preparation for a career in the Luftwaffe. Flying is their common bond and is to become their common destiny - but as enemies.
