Description

Author’s Note

This book is the second of a new series which was begun with the Spitfire Special by Ted Hooton. To have had the opportunity of providing a companion volume on the Vickers - Armstrong’s Wellington, the almost equally famous and contemporary aeroplane from the same Vickers stable as the immortal ’ Spit ’ has been a great challenge. The Wellington was an aeroplane of great strategic importance and I have related this story to the times in which, and the troubles into which, it flew. Space does not permit more than a brief glance at some of the very important work of the Wellington. I have chosen therefore a collection of cameos and photographs illustrating how and why it came about ( much of it new and extracted from the Manufacturer’s own records ) and something of its contribution to Allied victory. By no means is it intended to be the book to end all books on the subject. The vast amount of slogging work of this remarkable aeroplane and its crews requires a big book and, until such a full and definitive chronicle makes its appearance, it is my hope that this will provide an appetiser, an interesting and worthy tribute to an outstanding British achievement.
