Description

Almost everyone on the S.S. Karnak, cruising the Nile, has a reason to want spoiled, selfish and beautiful heiress Linnet Ridgeway Doyle (Lois Chiles) dead. Her jewels are coveted by elderly Mrs. Van Schuyler (Bette Davis); her maid, Louise, is upset because Linnet won't give her a promised dowry; writer Salome Otterbourne (Angela Lansbury) is facing a libel suit brought by Linnet; Salome's daughter Rosalie Otterbourne (Olivia Hussey) wants to protect her mother; Andrew Pennington (George Kennedy) has been embezzling from the Ridgeway family; and former friend Jacqueline De Bellefort (Mia Farrow) is more than a little angry and upset that Linnet stole her fiancé, Simon Doyle (Simon MacCorkindale). Renowned Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov) must unravel the mystery when Linnet (and some others) turn up dead.

5.0 out of 5 stars  “Vintage who done it with many twists”

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 November 2016

This is a vintage movie based on the writings of a writer noted for creating good crime stories. The story is full of intrigues twists and turns in order to keep you interested in the plot. There are many plots and sub plots. There are many recognisable faces from the international entertainment scene. Wonderful backgrounds and pretty costumes which all the cast wear. The society it is concerned with is the late nineteen twenties and early thirties. It also deals with wealth on many levels. Who is richer and who is more important is also discussed in dealing with the plot. It is an entertaining viewing and a good mystery if you hadn't seen it. Fascinating product. Thanks

5.0 out of 5 stars “WONDERFUL ACTING”

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 April 2015

This is really a classic. The cast is superb and the acting is unblemished. Having been in a Nile cruise myself, albeit without the murders, I loved the details of the scenery, vessel and hotel. The Cataract Hotel in Luxor is used at the beginning and the tango scene is filmed in there. As the film was made in 1978 there are no CGI's so you see the real locations.

There are screen legends in this film, such a Bette Davis, Maggie Smith and Peter Ustinov as Belgian detective Poiroit is fantastic.

Agatha Christie's book is followed well and there are plenty of images of the faluccas sailing in the Nile past the Cataract Hotel where she is said to have written the book. There are even shots of Egyptian boys bearing their bottoms on the shores to the passing steam boat (The Karnak) still in use today.

A lovely film all in all.

5.0 out of 5 stars  “Mystery & Intrigue on the Nile”

Reviewed in Canada on 26 October 2016

Peter Ustinov plays a very credible, Hercule Poirot. This is part of a series of films he was a part of portraying the Belgium sleuth. There is a vertible who's who of actors and actresses in this film, Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, David Niven and Maggie Smith. Also numerous American film stars. Beautifully filmed in Egypt, apparently on a Nile Cruise, the scenery is spectacular and is a backdrop to murder and intrigue. Excellent movie, can't beat the line-up of stars in the film and beautifully filmed.
