No discernible shelf wear, the interior is tight and spotlessly clean with  290 pages(16 pages of plates). THIS copy is the FIRST EDITION: Only printing from 1989 - the New Zealand publishing by Heinemann Reed, Auckland, New Zealand.

There are many black and white photographic illustrations - tables, maps, portraits.

SCARCE title - this is an  UNread copy!!

In original brown cloth boards with striking gold titles HARDcover binding, and housed in publisher's portrait illustrated dustjacket, unclipped, and in 'as new' condition. Superb Unread copy!

SYNOPSIS ....

 'At the time of his death in 1893 John Ballance was the most popular prime minister New Zealand had known. His funeral was attended by thousands. Dubbed "The Rainmaker", he had brought prosperity and hope to the country after years of depression. Born in Belfast in 1839, Ballance emigrated to New Zealand. at the age of 36 he entered Parliament, becoming Colonial Treasurer after only two years. In 1890 he led the New Zealand Liberal Party to victory for the first time. A man of considerable honesty, integrity and compassion, he held together a cabinet of strong, disparate personalities.' 

This absorbing read is based on the author's Ph.D thesis (Victoria University of Wellington) on John Ballance. 

The author, like his subject, was also born in Belfast.
