This is a lovely pottery tankard by Robert Stewart from his Scottish pottery dating between 1957 and 1963.

This particular tankard measures 13.5 cm in height.

Robert Stewart transfer printed his range of domestic wares and this tankard is decorated with very attractive shades of fresh blues, black and gold in a combination of geometric and lovely playful curved shapes.  The base gold rim is complete and untarnished and there is no crazing to the tankard. On the base there is the usual Robert Stewart printed name together with a four petalled shape in black.  The tankard handle also has a black scroll decoration.

Overall this tankard is in excellent condition.  However, there is a tiny oval chip to the base of the tankard (below the gold rim) close to the base of the handle which I have tried to show as completely as possible in the photographs.

Robert Stewart was one of the foremost designers of the second half of the 20th century and his work revolutionised design in post war Britain.  He trained at Glasgow School of Art and later became the Head of Printed Textiles. He was a contemporary of Lucienne Day and highly thought of by her.  He  designed fabrics for Liberty, Donald Brothers and the Edinburgh Tapestry Company and established his own pottery between 1957 and 1963 when he moved on to design and produce large scale ceramic murals for public buildings in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
