About the circumstances:

Wanda Jakubowska had been directing films in Poland since 1932, but when war broke out in 1939, she was driven into the Polish Resistance. Captured by the Nazis, she was sent to Auschwitz prison. She survived the horror by observing everything and dreaming of the day when she could document the atrocities she saw. In 1948 she had her chance. Ostatni Etap (The Last Stage) is her telling of her own experiences at Auschwitz. Marta Weiss (Barbara Drapinska) is brought to Auschwitz along with her family. Singled out as an interpreter, Marta's life is spared, but the rest of the family is not so fortunate. Over time she learns the fine line of dealing with her Nazi captors and capos--inmate collaborators--while still finding ways to resist. This country of origin poster has artwork by Tadeusz Trepkowski, one of the most influential Polish artists to emerge after the war.
