This is a beautiful high quality early 19th century rosewood slope front rosewood work box with a mother of pearl decorative inlay and escutcheon.  The condition of this lovely box is excellent and it is a lovely decorative piece.

This box measures 30 cm in width, has a depth of 24 cm and has a height of 9 cm at its highest point and 6.6 cm at its lowest point.

The box has a lovely shiny surface and the rosewood has lovely markings and variances of rich chestnut colouring.  The front slope of the box is decorated with a lovely rectangular inset of mother of pearl with a silver border.  The lock to the box is also decorated with a mother of pearl inlay and a silver border.  

The box opens and closes beautifully well and all of the original brass hinges are present and correct and are fully working.  I suspect this lovely box once had an internal writing slope which has since been removed so the box can be used as a work box.  Originally this would perhaps have been a lady’s portable writing desk as it is smaller and lighter in weight than might be expected.

The condition of the box is lovely and it has survived very well.  There is an area on the lower front left hand corner where a triangular shaped piece of rosewood veneer has fallen away but this does not detract from the appearance or use of the box.  The back of the box may have been facing the sun at some point as the veneer is less shiny than the front.  The inside of the box is clean and tidy and has been lined with a green coloured material which can be retained or removed very easily.  

This lovely high quality box sits solidly on a surface and is a beautifully decorative piece and would be a gorgeous addition to a decorative scheme sitting on a table or at a writing desk
