Rare Brass & Copper Ganga-Jumna Lota

This bulbous vessel was made to store lustral, holy water, perhaps from the Ganges. It is remarkable for the intricacy of its decoration which combines brass and copper to provide a pleasing contrast. It sits on a low foot, has a spherical base and a  beautiful slimming neck. The body is engraved and inlaid with bands of lotus petals. There are several damages to copper part and bends on the top. There is also a minute damage on top, which we have marked in the photos.

The technique of using brass and copper together in India is called Ganga-Jamuna, said to be from the colors of the Ganga and Jamuna rivers. Inlaying One Metal Into Other Is Called The GANGA-JAMUNA Work. The Base Metal Brass and Then Have Been Inlaid With The Copper.

It has a traditional rounded pot shape and would've been produced as a Lota / water vessel/ Flower Pot. It's been nicely decorated all around and as shown in the photos it displays beautifully - such a great talking piece.
