I have plugged the sata power cable but where am i supposed to connect the other sata cable?
The idea is that one goes to this and the other goes to a hard drive or optical drive that you stole the power from, if you don't have spare SATA power.
Is the sata power required to make the device work, or is just for extra power?
No, the SATA power cable is not required to be connected, just the USB 3.0 cable to a USB 3.0 header on the motherboard.
Are the sd and micro sd card readers designed to work independently?
No, they both come up as drive "G" on my pc. If I plug a micro sd and sd card at the same time only the first one I pluged in is recognised.
