Artist Lionel Willis joins forces with the then Director of the National Maritime Museum in order to present a study of British sailing craft in coastal trade over a period of a thousand years. Illustrated with 45 coloured plates in five-colour detailed and scaled paintings, plus 53 black & white illustrations that illuminate aspects of the source material ; each plate is fully described with particulars of rigging, fittings, hull structure, etc. The pictures are divided into four sections _ coastal vessels, local vessels, fishing vessels, and working boats. The types are too numerous to list but they include the Graveney Boat, a Hulk, the Earliest Three-Masted Ships, and a Hoy of the 18th century. Also the Frigate UNICORN of 1748, an 18th century Revenue Cutter, a Leith Smack, an Armed Transport of the War of 1812 and a 19th century Collier Brig. Others include a Merchant Schooner, the Barquentine WATERWITCH, a London River Sailing Barge of the 18th century, a Mersey Flat of the 19th century, an early Thames Bawley, a Penzance Lugger of the 19th century, a Brixham Trawler of the late 19th century, and a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter of the same period. This book unites up-to-date scholarship and the latest archaeological evidence, with the brilliant artistic technique developed by Lionel Willis.
