Procion MX dyes are cold water dyes used to color fabric, fibre, and yarn made from materials like cotton, bamboo, flax/linen, tencel, and viscose.
These dyes create a permanent bond with the fabric by combining with the cellulose or protein molecules. While Procion MX dyes can be used for silk and wool, Acid dyes are more effective for these fibres.
To achieve the most vibrant and long-lasting colours, mix the concentrated dye powders with cold tap water. To ensure the dye is wash-fast, it needs to be fixed with soda ash. For submersion dyeing, add soda ash directly to the dye bath. For techniques like Batik, Shibori, or Tie Dye, soak the fabric in a soda ash solution and dry it before starting the dyeing process.
Fibrecrafts Procion dyes are available in 20 colours, each in 50g pots. By carefully mixing and adjusting the concentration and dilution, you can create a wide range of shades and hues. For pale shades, you'll typically need 0.5g to 100g of dye per dry material, while deep shades require around 4.0g per 100g. Setting the dyes requires soda ash and salt.
Procion MX dyes can be stored as powders in an airtight container for a long time. However, they may lose some reactivity and wash fastness when exposed to adverse conditions like heat and light. To preserve their effectiveness, you can keep the dyes in the refrigerator for up to 14 days.
