After the Civil War started, the North soon moved from Old Fuss and Feathers, Winfield Scott as Commander, to George Brinton McClellan in October 1861. Both had shaped the army up in a remarkable fashion, but McClellan refused to commit it to some key early engagements which may have actually avoided the long-term blood bath it became.

Always popular with the average soldier, McClellan was engraved on 5" x 8" stationery such as this unused example, by a Pennsylvania publisher, J. McGee, so that soldiers could write home to their family within its four pages. Then, of course, McClellan got canned by President Lincoln for his further lack of aggressiveness in the face of the enemy and ended up becoming Abe's democrat party opponent in the 1864 presidential election. Talk about an ego!
