NEW 2012 Gooding Pebble Beach Concours Auction Set + von Krieger Book + Results

Always one of the highlights of Pebble Beach week, the Gooding Auction outdid itself in 2012 with a jam-packed auction tent and sales exceeding $113 million—$35 million more than the previous year's sale. Auctioneer Charlie Ross said he had never seen so many people at an auction, and there was plenty of standing on chairs in the peanut gallery, neck-craning, and digital phones held high overhead to get a photo or glimpse of the more exceptional cars.
As with all of David Gooding's wonderful catalogs, extensive descriptions and background are provided for each model and specific car. A minimum of two pages is devoted to each car and expansive multi-page layouts including exquisite modern and vintage photography are provided for all significant lots.
Without question, the two highlights of the 2012 auction were Saturday's sale of the 1960 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider, which sold for $11.275 million and set a world record for a Ferrari California Spider, and Sunday's highly anticipated sale of the von Krieger Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster, which electrified the room and brought $11.77 million, a new record auction sale price for a Mercedes-Benz and for pre-war car.
Over the weekend, eight 1952-1963 Ferraris sold for over $2 million each, including a 1957 250 GT LWB California Spider Prototype, which sold for $6.6 million. The Sherman M. Wolf Collection of four exceptional Ferraris was offered at this sale, including the 1960 California Spider mentioned above.
Other highlights included a 1928 Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Le Mans Sports "Bobtail" ($6.05 million), a 1964 Ford GT40 Prototype ($4.95 million), a 1953 Jaguar C-Type ($3.725 million), a 1959 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage ($3.52 million), a 1960 Porsche RS60 ($3.465 million), a 1932 Daimler 40/50 Double Six Sport Saloon ($2.97 million), a 1936 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante ($2.485 million), a 1919 Miller TNT ($1.21 million), and the list goes on. When a 2008 Bugatti Veyron fetching nearly $1.2 million barely makes the list of auction highlights, you know it was an exciting sale.
Set measures approximately 8.5" x 11" x 2" (22 x 28 x 5cm). The von Krieger supplement contains 48 pages of detail about this fantastic car and its history. Supplement is hardbound, and measures approximately 9" x 7" (22 x 28). All three pieces are in beautiful, new, unread condition with sharp corners, super-clean covers, and tight bindings.
