This kokeshi doll is inspired by David Bowie’s Aladin Shane alter ego.
Kokeshi are traditional Japanese dolls that are hand made using wood and are characterized by having a simple body trunk and a rounded head painted with simple lines.
The English studio Sketch Inc. and the Danish brand Lucie Kaas collaborate to bring us a peculiar version of these dolls. Different models of iconic characters of our history like Andy Warhol, Coco Chanel or Salvador Dalí. These original kokeshi are the perfect fusion of traditional design with pop culture.
Sketch Inc. introduces this series of decorative dolls inspired by traditional Japanese. These pop versions, maintain the same simplicity in the forms that their Japanese sisters. They are made of wood and hand painted like their Japanese counterparts by designer Becky Kemp in her small studio in England but these fun kokeshi go a step further. They bring us the representation of famous people from the world of fashion, art or music.
We have Elton John, Jean-Paul Gaultier with his striped sailor outfit, Salvador Dali with his peculiar mustache or Karl Lagerfeld wearing his characteristic black glasses…Many models each with its special charm. The simplicity with which the designer gets us to see these characters clearly charms.
